January-March 2015 Newsletter

Happy Holidays from your RECK board. We have had an interesting year and are still adjusting to the complete turnover of board members. We are busy planning exciting adventures for the coming year and hope you will join us. We are going to shake up some of the old events the club has sponsored in the past and add some new destinations. Of course the traditional Christmas party will stay on the calendar. Check your e-mail and our website regularly so you won’t miss out on our trips.

Dues: If you did not pay your dues at the December Christmas Party, you may mail your check for $20.00 to Cass Zabinski, 3211 Parkdale Dr. Kingwood, TX 77339.

Past Events:

October 10, 2014
Flowers, sunshine and good food was the venue for our trip to Woodville and the Harvest Festival at the pioneer village. We took the scenic route so we could enjoy the carpets of wild flowers in bloom. The home style menu really hit the spot with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and of course lots of cooked greens. Everyone seemed to enjoy the busy village with the tradesmen demonstrating their crafts and buses of school children enjoying a special field trip. Jim and Becky Jinnette once lived and worked in the Woodville area and were able to bring first hand knowledge of the pioneer village to the group. Thank you both for all your hard work.

November 12, 2014
The Deerwood Country Club was the setting for our gourmet wine tasting event. Each course served was paired with an appropriate wine including champagne cocktails as you enter the door. Chef Kevin did an excellent job of preparing and presenting the food. Thanks to Don and Paula Armstrong for arranging such an enjoyable night.

Important Information for RECK Members:

Dietary concerns: It has come to the attention of the RECK Board that some members require special diets because of allergies or health concerns. Please notify the sponsors of the event as soon as you sign up so arrangements can be made for alternate dishes. Last minute changes are difficult for the sponsors and the restaurant to accommodate.

Hosts for events: We have several events scheduled for the coming year that do not have host. It is imperative that members volunteer to host the events or the activities will be canceled. Hosting an event is very simple since the event, place, bus, and eating arrangements are already made by the social chairmen. The following events need hosts:

Wednesday April 14th–The Cardinal Neches River Adventure in Beaumont with lunch included
Thursday June 11th — A trip to the Johnson Space Center with a meal on the property
Wednesday July 9th –Tour the Federal Reserve Bank and lunch at the Spaghetti Warehouse

New Events

Houston Ship Channel
Wednesday, January 21, 2015

AHOY MATES! Your next adventure with RECK will be a 90 minute tour of the Houston Ship Channel. The ship channel celebrated its 100 year birthday in 2014 and if you’ve never taken the trip, it is really interesting. Ships from all over the world dock at the port to load and unload cargo. After the tour we will have a buffet lunch at Brady’s Landing Restaurant which is located near the ship channel. The cost for the tour and luncheon is $19.50 per person or $39.00 per couple.
Because of the security around the ship channel, everyone must have a picture ID to present to the port authority. Back packs are not allowed and large purses will be inspected before you board the ship. You may take photographs, but video taping is not allowed. This is an early morning trip so everyone will need to be at the Methodist Outreach Center by 8:15 AM. It takes about an hour to reach the loading area and we need time to check in with bags and identification. The tour has a limit of 38 members so get your reservations in early.

Host for this event are Ed and Mary Jasinski. Please send your checks to Mary Jasinski, 3907 Shady Terrace Drive, Kingwood, TX 77345. (281-360-4155) Final day for reservations is January 12, 2015.
